The SYNOD is involved in two areas of programming: Racial Ethnic Ministries and New Church Development. More than 160 of our 997 congregations have a racial ethnic membership of 20 percent or more, which includes persons of African American, Hispanic, Korean and Native American heritages. The presbyteries in our synod have organized 33 new congregations since 1998, and more are planned.

The SYNOD ranks second among the 16 synods in support of the Fund for Theological Education. Within the bounds of our synod there are two theological seminaries: Columbia (Decatur, GA) and Johnson C. Smith (Atlanta, GA). Also, our SYNOD has three colleges in its bounds: Agnes C. Scott (Decatur, GA), Eckerd (St. Petersburg, FL) and Presbyterian (Clinton, SC).

The Sam & Helen Walton Award Program
In late December 1991, Sam and Helen R. Walton made a generous gift through the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation of six million dollars. This gift included an endowment in the amount of three million dollars, the earned interest to be used by new church developments that have placed an emphasis on site acquisition.

The MDRC offers an opportunity annually to sessions, presbyteries and synods to nominate new church developments that are working in creative ways to bring the gospel to their local communities. Those chosen will receive a financial award of $30,000 – $50,000.

Walton Award Nomination Form

To be filed for each nominee and received in the Office of Mission Program Grants by January 30th of each year.

Loan Fund

The Mary E. Hemphill Fund was developed through the Former Synod of South Carolina and became a part of the Synod of the Southeast. The Fund was to provide small amounts of money at favorable interest for Church and/or Manse construction and for purchasing of new properties. All funds borrowed were to be paid with interest. It is now a part of the Synod of South Atlantic.
